The end of the summer before school started
Lucas had came from abroad to home just a few days ago and instead of getting a rest from his vacation with his family, his mother had forced him to go to the mall to buy new stuff for school. Did his mother, father or little sister come with him? No, of course not, they were tired from the vacation. But Lucas had to go, his mother gave him no other options.
So there he was, at the mall, walking with his nose stuck on his phone’s screen and wondering why hadn’t he asked his best friend to come with him? The whole day would’ve been so much more easier if Ronald would’ve came with him. But, Lucas, the idiot that he was, hadn’t asked him.
Suddenly he bumped into someone and dropped his phone.
“O, shit!” Lucas yelped and dived on the floor to save his phone.
“Watch it”, said a nice, deep voice, which was ruined because it sounded very hostile and angry.
Lucas picked up his phone, straightened up and looked at the lad he had bumped into. He had his brown, wavy hair pushed back and big, grey eyes were staring at Lucas angrily.
“Jeez”, Lucas said and grinned. “I didn’t punch you, I only nudged you a little. No need to get your panties on a twist because of that.”
Disbelief spread on the lad’s face and he raised his eyebrows, mouth pressed in a thin line and he clenched his fists. Lucas noticed all of that, he was very aware of things happening around him, and he squirmed uncomfortably.
“Please don’t hit me”, Lucas said quickly. “I’m just so used to being sarcastic, annoying little shit to my best friend, who is a total pussy by the way so he makes it easy for me to– I’m going to shut up now, you don’t care about me or my best friend, I’m sorry–“
The lad rolled his eyes, his fists opened and he laughed. Lucas felt confused. Why. The fuck. Was this lad’s laugh the most beautiful thing he had ever heard? Lucas bit his own tongue harshly and thought to himself that he needed to chill the fuck out.
“You’re cute”, the lad said. He was easily taller than Lucas, but Lucas had more muscles. Now that the lad wasn’t glaring at Lucas angrily, he had a small smirk playing on his lips all the time and Lucas was lowkey into that.
What is happening? Lucas thought and slowly registered what the lad had said.
“Cute? Did you say cute?” Lucas asked. Wow, really smooth Lucas. Usually he was a lot smoother, more confident and he had always words ready to come out of his mouth but now? He felt shy and clumsy. Not like himself. How was that even possible?
“You heard me”, the lad said, and took a step closer to Lucas, giving him a look from head to toe. “And handsome too.”
Smooth bastard, Lucas thought but all he got out of his mouth was: “I– You– No– I mean, you don’tssss-didsss-I haventsss– Aw, fuck.”
The lad’s eyes brightened up and he tilted his head a little and crossed his arms. “Are you always this smooth around guys, or am I just special?”
Lucas felt his cheeks burning in embarrassment and he didn’t trust to open his mouth anymore. Exactly when did he became a stuttering mess, like Ronald? God damn it.
“Well?”
Lucas shook his head.
“What? I’m not special?” the lad asked, smirking charmingly.
Lucas shook his head again.
“I am special?”
Lucas hesitated but nodded. Then he bit his lip and said quickly before he could stutter: “I’mnotusuallyamesslikethis, I swear.”
“And what are you like, usually?”
Lucas shrugged, not really knowing what to say. The lad made him feel restless, warm and fuzzy, and like a total clumsy mess. Why? How was that even possible, when Lucas was usually the smoothest little shit you could possibly find?
“Are you scared to talk to me?” the lad asked curiously.
“No, but I think we already established that I can’t speak”, Lucas muttered.
“Around me”, the lad added.
Lucas huffed and tried avoiding eye contact with the lad. “Yeah, around you.”
“That’s flattering, you know”, the lad said, smiled and offered his hand to Lucas. “I’m Ransley.”
Lucas stared at the hand, afraid of what would happen if he touched it. What if he gets butterflies in his stomach like in those shitty romance movies he secretly liked? What would he do then? Scream and run?
Don’t be stupid, Lucas told himself, took a hold of Ransley’s hand and shook it.
“Lucas”, he introduced himself and tried his best to ignore the tingling feeling he got on his hand. He stared at Ransley and then looked at their hands. “Are you going to let go?”
“No.”
“You can’t keep holding my hand forever.”
Ransley pulled Lucas closer by his hand and leaned closer, closer and closer, right on until he could whisper in Lucas’ ear: “Sounds like a challenge to me.”
Lucas heart missed a beat and his breathing was uneven. He pulled his hand free and took a step back. “As much fun as this has been, I need to go.”
“Then go.”
“I am going”, Lucas said, but was unable to make himself take a step.
“You’re still standing.”
“I’m preparing myself to go.”
“Are you sure you want to go?”
“Yes. No. Yes! I don’t know.”
“Do you like ice cream?”
Lucas was caught off guard. “What?”
“Do you like ice cream?”
“Um… Yes?” Lucas said hesitantly. He loved ice cream, to be completely honest.
“Have ice cream with me”, Ransley said, smirked and took a step closer, leaning in. “I mean, it’s just an ice cream, right? Nothing to be stressed about, right?”
“Right”, Lucas breathed out, staring into Ransley’s eyes which were so close he could see every detail of his big eyes. Then they were gone as Ransley took a step back and motioned towards the ice cream bar.
“Shall we?”
“Not like a date or anything, right?” Lucas asked, still hesitating.
“Of course not”, Ransley said, smiling charmingly. “It’s just two pals having ice cream.” Lucas nodded and was just about to sigh in relief when Ransley continued, “When I take you out on date, you’ll be so impressed you fall for me in one night.”
Lucas couldn’t breathe.
“Who said I’ll go out on a date with you?” Lucas asked, being glad that he had managed to get his speaking skills back and he felt a little bit more like himself and less like Ronald.
Ransley shrugged. “I can hope, can’t it?”
Silence when Lucas didn’t know what to say and Ransley clearly expected him to say something. Lucas didn’t know what to do or say when a lad, who he thought was good looking, showed openly that he was interested in Lucas, too. It had never happened before.
O, shit, Lucas thought, when he realised what was going on. I think he’s hot! And I like him!
“Well?”
“Well what?” Lucas asked, trying to collect himself.
“That ice cream?”
“Oh! Right, right, right. Right.” Lucas scratched his neck. He didn’t dare to decline now, so he nodded. “Sure, let’s go get ice cream. But that’s all.”
“Okay, if you say so”, Ransley said and motioned Lucas to follow him. “But I’m just saying, you wouldn’t regret going on a date with me. I can pull together a magnificent date.”
“I’m sure you can”, Lucas said and wiggled his fingers nervously which, again, was so not like him. “But I’m not…”
“You are not what? Gay?”
Lucas laughed timidly.
“Um, actually I think I am”, he said. “I just… no one knows. Fuck, I barely know it. So I can’t just…um, we can’t just–“
“It’s fine”, Ransley interrupted him. “I can wait for you.”
Lucas looked at Ransley, who smiled at him, and suddenly he knew that he couldn’t just brush Ransley off like some random dude. The tingling feeling he got around the lad was too strong. So, Lucas gathered up all his courage and said, “Wait until I can wrap my head around this and then I’ll go on a date with you.”
“Deal”, Ransley said without missing a beat.
