“Ronald Kimberly Quinn!” Lucas said sternly, standing right in front of Ronald, who, however, was watching straight through Lucas, eyes focused on Farrah who was behind Lucas’ back. “You and Farrah are not going to kill Ransley!”
Lucas didn’t know why he was so reluctant to Ronald’s plan to kill Ransley. Maybe because;
1. it would be a murder.
2. Lucas didn’t want Ronald to become a murderer.
3. deep down Lucas cared about Ransley and didn’t think he deserved to die. Sure, Ransley was an awful person who had done awful things but Lucas knew there was more to that story. He didn’t know everything and he just knew it. There were so many things unanswered and he wanted answers.
4. IT WAS RONALD, FOR FUCK’S SAKE! Lucas was sure Ronald, no matter how mad at the moment, could not in the end handle the weight of his actions if he murdered someone. Ronald wasn’t that kind of strong. Not at least the Ronald that Lucas knew.
Lucas sighed when Ronald and Farrah continued walking. He followed them, like he had done every day after his funeral because he didn’t want to miss anything. He knew there was nothing he could do to stop Ronald and Farrah, but still.
Suddenly they stopped walking and had a short conversation which Lucas couldn’t hear properly because he was not, once again, concentrating. He watched how Ronald and Farrah started running.
“Wait, what?” Lucas wondered and followed them.
They ended up to the cemetery and soon Lucas saw the reason for that; Ransley was kneeling in front of Lucas’ gravestone.
“Oh, no”, Lucas muttered and looked around. “This is not good.”
He stared how Ransley got up, touched gently the gravestone and turned to look at Ronald and Farrah. Even Lucas, who was standing far behind them, could see clearly that Ransley had cried. Lucas also noticed that Ransley looked nothing like what Lucas was used to. Usually Ransley was very clean; his hair was never messy, his clothes were always fancy and he had smooth skin, no beard. But now Ransley’s hair was dirty and messy, his clothes were wrinkled and he had a stubble. He looked like he hadn’t slept in week and that smirk which usually played on his lips all the time? It was gone.
“I loved that smirk”, Lucas said quietly as he watched Ransley’s raggedy style and lips that were pressed together with no sign of a smile.
Then Lucas realised they were talking while he had been examining Ransley.
“But I really cared about him”, Ransley was just saying and Lucas heart hurt because did Ransley care about him? Sure, his appearance and words let people understand one thing but his actions… Why did he do all those things to Ronald if he cared about Lucas? Ransley had said that he didn’t mean to attack Ronald but he still did it.
Lucas saw how Ronald nodded at Farrah, who immediately went full on vampire mode and attacked Ransley.
“No!” Lucas yelled, helpless and scared. He was afraid someone would get hurt. “Stop it!”
But Farrah kept attacking and Ransley kept defending himself. Then Farrah kicked Ransley in stomach, took him into a choke hold and held him there while he was gasping for air.
“Please, Farrah, hear me!” Lucas yelled and moved closer. “Don’t do it! You don’t have to do it.” Lucas turned to look at Ronald. “Tell her she doesn’t need to do it. I’m okay, you guys don’t have to avenge me!”
“This is for killing Lucas and turning me”, Ronald said, staring at Ransley. Lucas wanted to cry; why couldn’t they hear him when it was necessary? He needed them to hear him.
Suddenly Lucas saw how Ramsey materialised behind Ronald and in a blink of an eye the green fire left Ramsey’s hand and hit Farrah.
As Ronald ran to check up on Farrah, Ramsey moved to stand between them and Ransley and Lucas stood there as a wallflower, invisible and voiceless.
He listened how his best friend talked with Ramsey and how Ramsey told that he is going to take Ransley six feet under with him.
Lucas’ heart beat fast and he wanted to scream and shout, but he knew it would be useless. So he watched in horror how Ransley begged for Ramsey to kill him and how Ramsey was just about to do it, when suddenly he put his hand down.
He didn’t do it, Lucas realised.
“Oh, my God”, Lucas said and breathed out a sigh of relief.
“I’m sorry, Ronald. Goodbye”, Lucas heard Ramsey say and then he disappeared with Ransley. Lucas felt like he could breathe again.
Instead of staying and watching Ronald and Farrah, and making sure they were okay, curiosity filled Lucas and he went after Ramsey and Ransley. Did he feel bad about not staying with Ronald and Farrah? Sure. But did that stop him from going after Ramsey and Ransley? No. Definitely no.
Lucas knew that as long as Ronald and Farrah had each other, they would survive.
Lucas looked around in a cottage in the middle of the woods. He had no idea where he was, but he knew he was were he should be, because he saw Ransley standing in front of Ramsey, looking confused and furious.
“Why did you do that?” Ransley hissed. “I was ready to die!”
“Perhaps you were”, Ramsey said, “but Lucas wouldn’t have wanted you to die.”
“Don’t say his name!” Ransley yelled and tried to punch Ramsey in the face. Lucas watched how the warlock dodged the punch and immediately punched Ransley in the face. Blood started running from his nose and for a moment Lucas thought that maybe Ramsey had changed his mind again and will kill his brother after all, but then Ramsey started talking.
“This isn’t going to be easy, brother.”
“What do you mean?” Ransley asked, wiping the blood from his nose.
“I haven’t figured this out yet”, Ramsey said, “but I will help you gain control.”
Ransley didn’t look happy and Lucas walked closer because he was curious to hear what Ramsey would say next.
“I was wrong, Ransley”, Ramsey said.
“About what?” Ransley asked, sounding rude.
“About you. About Lucas.” Ramsey spread his arms. “I understand now what Lucas saw in you and what I had failed to see.”
“And what is that?” Ransley asked, and Lucas could hear the violent tone in his voice.
“Hope”, Ramsey said and Lucas just knew that Ransley had not expected that, because he looked surprised for a second before he gained control of his face again.
“You’re delusional”, Ransley said.
“I need to spend more time with you”, Ramsey said, ignoring Ransley’s words, “in order to find out what you are, what triggers you and how can I help you.”
“You can’t help me!” Ransley yelled angrily. “Don’t you get it? It’s too late and there’s no even point for that anymore!” Ransley took a step closer to Ramsey. “You should’ve let me die.”
“I know now that Lucas helped you to gain control”, Ramsey said, once again ignoring Ransley’s words. “Otherwise you wouldn’t have protected him from Ronald when he lost control.”
Lucas watched how Ransley’s hands were shaking and he was breathing heavily, like as if he was doing everything he could to prevent himself to lose his shit.
“What’s your game, Ransley?” Lucas muttered, unable to understand a thing.
“So what’s the plan, huh?” Ransley asked.
“I don’t know”, Ramsey said. “I will help you gain control of your anger and pain, in order to make you more stable.”
Lucas listened how Ramsey explained to Ransley what he thought was behind all the shit Ransley had done; mental health problems, the pain and anger that came with becoming werewolf, not being able to control it.
Frankly, Lucas didn’t understand much of it, he was so confused, but he decided to let it sink in and get back to it later, because then he might actually understand what is going on.
“And what if you don’t succeed?” Ransley asked.
Ramsey shrugged.
“Well, I have been wrong before”, he said, “but I’m fairly sure I won’t fail this one.”
Ransley smirked, and said, “Sounds like challenge to me.”
In that smirk Lucas saw the old Ransley, the one who always dressed nicely and kept himself clean. And those words that Ransley said, they reminded Lucas of their first meeting and his heart almost popped out of his chest.
