Time was a weird thing to Lucas. Sometimes he forgot to concentrate and everything ended up being blurry and he couldn’t hear anything, and when he startled and looked around, examined the world he was seeing, he realised that days, probably weeks, had passed.
Because of that, everything seemed to happen too fast. Everyone seemed to move on too quickly. Lucas followed the lives of his family and of course he also followed Ronald’s life. Funny thing about Ronald dealing with Lucas’ death; Lucas could clearly see all the stages that Ronald went through.
Denial.
Anger.
Bargaining.
Depression.
At first it seemed like Ronald could never accept the fact that Lucas was gone. Lucas watched how Ronald was in denial, but then it changed in a blink of an eye. After Lucas’ funeral Ronald jumped on anger and then soon after to bargaining and depression. But he was making progress, Lucas could see that, and all he really wanted was Ronald to be okay. Not feel guilty or blame himself for what had happened. It hadn’t been Ronald’s fault.
It was different for his parents when it came to dealing with Lucas’ death. They didn’t go so clearly through the stages that Ronald had. They kind of jumped straight to anger and stayed there. They were fighting all the time, maybe even more than what they did when Lucas had been still alive. But Lucas didn’t worry about them.
The only one who really worried Lucas, was Emily. His little sister didn’t seem to be doing so well. She was quiet, which was so not Emily’s style, and she had shut down completely.
“You’re just sitting in your room, staring at a wall”, Lucas said, standing next to Emily. “How can I help you, lil’ sis?”
“Emily! Time to go to a brunch”, Mrs. Boyd yelled.
Emily didn’t answer to her mother, she just got up from her bed, walked straight through Lucas and checked her phone as she went.
That’s another thing that bothered Lucas. Sure, he knew that Emily spends a lot of time on her phone, she had always done that, but now it was different. It was like she was waiting for something.
“What are you planning, sister?” Lucas muttered. He had started to feel anxious and it was because of his little sister. He hated seeing her like that, which made him wonder if he really wanted to spend his time watching how his little sister gets worse and worse until the end of the world.
Lucas had disappeared into the blurry, timeless place without even noticing, but he didn’t care. He tried to think about all the ways he could signal to Emily that she didn’t have to be sad. Or no, she had the right to be sad but she didn’t have to shut down completely. Lucas was okay, he was there and he wasn’t going anywhere without knowing that his dear ones would be okay.
Lucas went to his old high school one day, just out of curiosity. He stared at his locker, amused. There was a picture of him smiling at the camera on it and lots of hearts, paper flowers and whatnot. It was all very fake and amusing, considering Lucas hand’t been exactly popular. He hadn’t been an outsider either, nor had he been invisible like Ronald. But having his locker looking like that? That was fake.
Of course Lucas knew that the other high schoolers didn’t actually miss him or were sad that he was dead. Or no, maybe they were sad but not because they knew Lucas. They were sad because Lucas’ death served as a reminder that life is short and anyone could die at any second. Even teenagers that liked to think that they were immortal.
Lucas left his locker and followed Ronald to the biology class, since Ronald had finally decided to make an appearance at school. He was rather intrigued to see how the teachers would handle Ronald now that they knew that his best friend was dead.
Throughout the whole day, none of the teachers, not a single one of them, took any contact to Ronald. None. They didn’t look at Ronald, they didn’t talk to him and they definitely didn’t ask him any questions during the lessons.
Boi, Lucas thought. They really are letting him do whatever he wants, huh? How is that going to help him to move on and accept my death? Stupid teachers. They never understand how teenagers function.
As it got kind of bored to watch Ronald moping around in school, Lucas went to see the one who he had spent most of his time with: Emily.
Emily wasn’t in school. Well, in fact, she was in school, but she wasn’t in her class. She was sitting on the toilet’s floor, scrolling through her phone.
“What are you doing?” Lucas asked, but of course Emily couldn’t hear him. “I’m worried, Ems. Please go to talk with someone at least.”
The toilet’s door opened and Emily’s best friend, Charlotte, poked her head inside.
“Hi, Ems”, she said.
“Hi, Lottie”, Emily replied and put her phone away. “Did the class already end?”
“No”, Charlotte said. “I asked the teacher if I could go to the toilet.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew you’d be here.”
Charlotte sat down next to Emily and Lucas breathed out slowly.
Come on, Ems, he thought. Talk with her. Open up.
“Did you get it?” Charlotte asked.
“Get what?” Lucas asked.
Emily shook her head.
“Not yet”, she said. “I’m waiting for a cheaper price before buying it.”
“Do you think it will work?”
“What will work?” Lucas almost yelled.
“I don’t know”, Emily said and smiled at Charlotte sadly. “But I sure as hell hope so.”
“Do you?” Charlotte asked.
Emily nodded. “Yes, I do.”
What are you talking about? Lucas rubbed his face in frustration and groaned. Emily was planning on something and Lucas was even more worried now.
