At first he heard annoying beeping. It wasn’t rhythmical, smoothing beeping, but rather like a panic! Panic! Panic! -kind of beeping. He didn’t know why it made him feel that way, so restless, maybe it was because it was such a chaos. The beeping sound seemed to come from everywhere, it surrounded him.
It made him think that hey, was he supposed to remember something? He couldn’t remember anything. Or no, that was not true, he did remember something. He remembered that his name was Lucas Boyd. He was seventeen. His best friend’s name was Ronald Quinn. Ronald had started dating Farrah Livingstone. Lucas had had a boyfriend, Ransley, who turned out to be a werewolf and–
Lucas opened his eyes in a second and the first thing he saw was himself on a hospital bed, twisting and turning all over the place. All the monitors around him were beeping like a crazy and all the lights were flickering like crazy.
“What the fuck?” Lucas whispered as he watched himself twist and turn on the bed while he was standing a few meters away from the bed. It was confusing. Then he felt how someone ran through him and Lucas saw doctors surrounding his bed, and he couldn’t see himself anymore.
He turned around and saw none other than Ronald Quinn, his tall and lanky best friend standing there. Next to him was Farrah, Ronald’s girlfriend. Ronald had tears in his eyes, Farrah was squeezing Ronald’s hand and looked very sad, like she was ready to cry at any second.
Weird thing was, that they were looking straight through Lucas. But then Lucas realised that he had just been staring at his own body on the bed. The fact that his friends were not looking at Lucas but his body on the bed through him, was not so weird after all.
The loud beeping from his heart monitor pierced through Lucas’ ears and rose above all the other noises. Beep. Beep. Beep.
Suddenly Lucas noticed that Ronald and Farrah were not alone. It was odd that he didn’t see them right away, but everything was so blurry around him until he focused his eyes on certain points, so that might explain it.
Why on Earth did Ramsey Barlow look so devastated? He was a 300 years old warlock who didn’t usually show emotions. Why was his face like that now? And next to him… Lucas felt a twist inside his stomach.
Why was his boyfrien– ex-boyfriend in the same room as Ronald? Last thing Lucas remembered was that Ransley, his ex-boyfriend, was a werewolf who had turned his best friend into a werewolf too and Ramsey was hunting Ransley. So what the fuck did they all do in the same room, looking like someone die–
“Oh, fuck”, Lucas cursed when he realised. He was dying. That was why he was seeing himself on the bed and others couldn’t see him. He was having that out-of-body -experience.
I should’ve realised it faster, Lucas thought, feeling stupid.
Beep. Beep. Beep. The heart monitor beeped louder and louder every second.
Lucas eyes flickered between Ronald, Farrah, Ramsey and Ransley and himself on the bed. He watched how everything unfolded in front of him.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
“Ronald?” Lucas said, looking at his best friend who had tears rolling down on his eyes, suddenly feeling even more restless. “Ronald, I’m scared.”
Ronald didn’t react to his words and Lucas felt the panic rising.
“Ronald!” Lucas yelled. “Ronald, can you hear me!”
Then he realised something.
The repeating beep had stopped. Now it was a long beep. Like, beeeeeeeeeeee… It didn’t have an end. It echoed everywhere around him and hurt his ears.
Then Ransley turned around on his heels and walked out of the hospital room. Lucas felt his heart breaking as he watched how the love of his life, who had turned out to be… kind of a bad guy, walked out. He stepped right in front of crying Ronald.
“RONALD!” he yelled over the long beep. “RONALD!”
He turned to look at the heart monitor and saw that it had flat lined. But how could it be? Lucas could clearly feel his heart beating faster than it had ever beat before. He was sure that any time now the doctors would make his body’s, that was lying on the bed, heart beat again. Any time now.
But they didn’t and when the doctor opened his mouth to announce the time of death, Lucas saw a bright light in front of him. Not giving it much thought, he turned his back to it, looked at his best friend and a tear rolled down his cheek and he yelled at his best friend, he yelled at Farrah and he yelled at Ramsey. But they didn’t hear him, they didn’t look at him, no matter how much he begged them to see him, to hear him.
Lucas realised that he was, in fact, dead.
