“Hi, Emily”, Ronald said a few days later, and leaned against her bedroom’s doorframe. “Can I come in?”
Emily, who was lying on her bed, quickly got up and nodded. “Do you have any news from Lucas? You haven’t told me anything since the day I told you that Lucas needed our help. I figured you were too busy to tell me, but it would’ve been nice to get some news.”
“I know”, Ronald said. “I’m sorry. But I’m here now to tell you what Lucas wanted me to tell you.”
“And what is that?”
Ronald admired how Emily didn’t question that Ronald had a message for her from her dead older brother. She just straight up accepted it.
“Lucas told me to tell you that he got his forever”, Ronald said. “Does that tell anything to you?”
Emily started smiling and a tear rolled down on her cheek as she nodded.
“Yeah”, she said. “It tells me that he is in peace.” Emily wiped her eyes and took a deep breath. “How did he manage to move on?”
“I don’t know”, Ronald said. “I guess he was just ready for it.”
“I’m glad”, Emily said quietly and smiled at Ronald. “Thank you for telling me.”
“Of course.” Ronald hugged her. “You deserved to know.”
“What are you going to do now?” Emily asked.
Ronald glanced out of the window where Farrah was standing by the gates, waiting for him.
“Live my life, I guess”, Ronald said. “Lucas would’ve wanted it.” Ronald turned his eyes back to Emily. “I decided to get over my fear of flying. Farrah and I are going to start travelling this summer.”
“Like our family did”, Emily said.
“Yes. Like your family did.”
They sat in silence for a while until they heard Mrs. Boyd yelling that Emily should get ready for brunch.
“I guess I should go”, Ronald said and took a step towards the door. “Are you going to be okay?”
“Yes”, Emily said confidently. “Mum and Dad are fighting less, my brother’s in peace, I have friends… I’m going to be just fine.”
Ronald nodded, smiled, waved his hand and then left the room and the house.
Farrah smiled at him as he walked up to her. “How did it go?”
“She is a smart girl.”
“She’s going to be okay?”
“Yeah, she is going to be okay.”
Farrah nodded. “Are you ready?”
Ronald glanced at the Boyd’s house one last time before nodding.
“Yes”, he said. “I’m ready.”
Next June, Ronald and Farrah were sitting in Lucas’ favourite coffee shop in France. Farrah was an experienced coffee drinker, so she knew how good the coffee was in that place. Ronald, however, didn’t usually drink coffee so he grimaced after every single sip he took.
“Stop doing that”, Farrah hissed quietly. “People are staring.”
“Are you ashamed of me?”
“Yes. Definitely yes.”
Ronald shrugged.
“At least it’s not haemorrhoids”, he said and laughed. “Remember when Lucas told you that? That I had haemorrhoids?”
Farrah laughed too. “Yes, and I always knew it was a lie. I’m good at telling when people lie.”
“I know you are”, Ronald said. “God, it was so embarrassing. And it was just like Lucas to come up with something so idiotic.”
Farrah nodded in agreement and for a moment they sat there, thinking about Lucas and his idiotic ideas, and then Ronald cracked a smile and stood up.
“Let’s go to see the Eiffel tower”, he said and offered his hand to Farrah. “I want to take a picture with it.”
“Sure”, Farrah said and took a hold of Ronald’s hand. He pulled her up on her feet and they started walking towards the Eiffel tower, hand in hand and smiling widely.
