Lucas sat on top of the cliff, stared at the sunset and thought about his life. It had been a good one, right? He didn’t regret things, he had lived a good life. Short, yes, but good. He had travelled, made friends, laughed, cried, fell in love… He laughed when a thought crossed his mind.
He had got his forever within the numbered days.
God, he had hated that movie. It had made him cry so much and Emily wouldn’t shut up about it. And the book! Boi, Lucas had never read a book so fast. The Fault in Our Stars really had touched him, and Emily never let him forget that. They had even visited that stupid bench from the movie when they had been in Amsterdam.
At some point his laughter died and tears came back, but these were the happy tears. And when they dried down, Lucas felt empty, but in a good way. Like he had gave everything. And this time he knew he had given everything, for real.
“I’m ready”, Lucas whispered. “I’m ready for my rest.”
And then he saw a bright, eye hurting bright light at the bottom of the cliff. In that moment Lucas remembered seeing the light in the hospital too and suddenly everything made sense: It was never about wanting to move on. It was about being ready to move on.
He hadn’t been ready at the hospital but now he was.
Lucas gave one last look at the sunset. He took in all the colours, different shades, warm tones and the sun that got lower every passing second.
Then he jumped.
