Corlisse’s voice yanked Lucas away from his memories and back to the present. He blinked his eyes, trying desperately to see.
“The ring is perfect”, Corlisse said. “You just have to put it on your finger and it should guide your soul to the right place.”
“Where are we doing this?” Ronald asked.
“What do you mean with ‘we’?” Ramsey asked, narrowing his eyes at Ronald. “You’re not a warlock, are you?”
“No?”
“So you can’t help us”, Ramsey said. “Stay out of our way as we handle this.”
“Lucas is my best friend!” Ronald said angrily. “You can’t keep me away!”
“Me neither”, Farrah said.
Please, God. If you hear me, please, please don’t let them do this, Lucas prayed but as he focused his mind back to the gang inside Ronald’s room, they were still planning what to do.
“Let them come with us, Ramsey”, Corlisse said, slapping Ramsey’s head. “You do not have to be so rude. Have a little compassion.”
Lucas glared at them all and felt tears burning behind his eyes. He couldn’t stop them. There was nothing he could do. And he was sure Ransley would die. No way would he survive this. Lucas was not ready to see that, despite of everything.
“We go to the cave”, Ramsey said. “It’s too risky to do it here. Ronald’s mother could come in at any second. Not that I care, but I don’t want anything disturbing us – otherwise Ransley dies.”
“Sad”, Ronald muttered. Lucas wanted to slap his head but luckily Farrah elbowed him in the ribs. Lucas really liked Farrah at that moment.
“I will take Ransley and Corlisse to the cave since Corlisse doesn’t know where it is and can’t materialise herself there”, Ramsey said. “Ronald and Farrah can come on their own.”
“You got to promise you won’t start without us”, Ronald demanded. “Promise!”
“Fine. I promise”, Ramsey said grumpily.
“You better keep that promise better than what you kept the one where you promised to keep Lucas safe”, Ronald pointed out, sounding confident. And rude.
Lucas ignored the look Ramsey gave to Ronald and focused instead on Ransley who was still very quiet.
“You are not in your full health”, Lucas said quietly to Ransley even though he couldn’t hear Lucas. “You haven’t eaten properly. You haven’t slept in days. You should not do this!”
But Ransley walked straight through Lucas to Ramsey, then took a hold of his brother’s shoulder and just like that Ramsey, Ransley and Corlisse disappeared.
Lucas watched how Farrah and Ronald packed up stuff on a bag and then Farrah motioned Ronald to close his eyes as she prepared to use her vampire speed to get them to the cave.
Ronald and Farrah arrived to the cave at the same time as Lucas. It took a moment for all the blurriness to move to the sides so Lucas could see Ronald, Farrah and Ramsey, Ransley and Corlisse standing inside the cave.
They are really going to do it, Lucas realised. And there was nothing he could do to stop them. It doesn’t matter how much he would beg them to stop, they wouldn’t hear him. Lucas was so done with being invisible, voiceless, alone. But that didn’t mean he wanted Ransley to risk his life to get to him. And Ramsey and Corlisse’s lives too.
“Ransley, lay down”, Ramsey ordered.
Ransley did as he was told, and Lucas’ heart started beating faster. He wasn’t sure whether he could watch the whole thing or not.
“We need you to be completely still”, Corlisse said as she kneeled down next to Ransley. “Do not panic. Breathe slowly and evenly. Keep your eyes closed. Put the ring on your finger.”
Ransley nodded and did as he was told.
“We cannot give you much time”, Corlisse said. “You cannot stay long. Remember that.”
Ransley took a deep breath, nodded and breathed out.
“Are you ready, little brother?” Ramsey asked.
Ransley nodded again and Ramsey kneeled on the other side of Ransley. Ronald and Farrah stayed at the back of the cave, staring at the trio. Lucas watched in horror how the green fire light up in Ramsey’s hands and then Corlisse snapped her fingers and blue fire light up in her hands. They placed their hands over Ransley’s chest, and started. Ransley’s necklace glowed as well as Corlisse’s head piece.
Ransley twitched once when the green and blue fire touched his chest and then he lied silently in place, as if like he was dead.
Lucas fell to his knees, hands covering his mouth.
“The ring is perfect”, Corlisse said. “You just have to put it on your finger and it should guide your soul to the right place.”
