Everyone had left but Ronald was still there, sitting on a bench in the cemetery. He stared at nothing, his mind completely blank.
It had been a beautiful ceremony. Lucas’s funeral was polished, perfect in a way. Ronald huffed. Lucas would have hated it all. Every flower they had brought to his grave, all the kind, fake words people had said. He would have absolutely hated it.
Ronald hadn’t cried. He was already way past crying, he had done his fair share of it. He had had enough, there was no more tears to come. He had delivered a speech at the funeral and he hadn’t cried but Lucas’s parents and little sister had cried on his behalf too. Ronald felt bad for them, so bad. He wanted to do something to help them but he couldn’t. He couldn’t do a damn thing to make them feel better. All he could do was lie.
When they had asked what had happened Ronald had lied to them that he and Lucas had went to the woods just for fun and Lucas had fallen off a cliff, that it had been an accident. Just an accident.
But Ronald knew it wasn’t an accident. Farrah had told him what had happened. Ronald put all the blame in Ransley. He hated the man with all his heart. He yearned for revenge.
Ramsey appeared out of nowhere next to Ronald and for a moment they sat in silence. But then Ronald said, “This is his fault, he made this happen. It’s because of him that Lucas is gone.”
“You know he tried to protect Lucas”, Ramsey said. “You were going to attack Lucas and Ransley stepped in between the two of you and protected him by attacking you. He jumped on you and you both fell, Lucas with you unfortunately.”
“Are you seriously taking his side right now?!” Ronald hissed in anger. “Are you seriously telling me this is my fault?!”
“No! No, sorry”, Ramsey said and caught Ronald off guard because when did Ramsey ever apologise? “That was an inappropriate thing to say.”
“Hell yes it was!” Ronald said angrily, recovering from his surprise and anger now floating in him. “Do you know why you still haven’t managed to kill Ransley?” Ronald stood up, crossing his arms so that he wouldn’t punch Ramsey in anger. “It’s because he’s your little brother! You’re not really even trying because deep down you don’t want to kill him.”
“That’s not–“
“But you know what? If you won’t kill him, I will”, Ronald said, cold look in his eyes.
“And I will help him”, said Farrah from behind Ronald.
Ronald took Farrah’s hand in his own and stared at Ramsey.
“He’s as good as dead”, Ronald said and meant it, that’s how strong his anger was.
It was pretty obvious that Ronald was not going to graduate on time but he didn’t care. He skipped school all the time and his parents didn’t even yell at him for it. Not even his father. They thought he was mourning Lucas, which he was, but in reality he didn’t spent his time in his room mourning. No, he was with Farrah, planning what to do to get Ransley down once and for all.
“How should we do this?” Ronald asked. “I can’t harm him, not really unless I’m a werewolf.”
“And I don’t want you to go attacking him as a human”, Farrah said. “I’m… I’m afraid you couldn’t handle the aftermath that comes from killing someone. I’d know.”
“Canyouhandle it?” Ronald asked.
“I have had 600 years time to learn to live with the fact that I’m a killer”, Farrah said and looked down. “I suppose… I could do it one more time.”
“You’re offering to...”, Ronald couldn’t finish his sentence.
“I am.”
“I can’t let you–“
“It’s the only way”, Farrah said, interrupting Ronald. “Ramsey is a powerful warlock, even without his mother’s necklace, he should’ve been able to kill Ransley already. You were right, he has been holding back.”
“I know, I figured it out”, Ronald said and sighed. “Okay, we will do it your way. How do we find him, though?”
Farrah thought about it for a moment. “I may be able to locate him if he’s close. Maybe we just need to keep listening and do it when he is close enough for me to hear and locate him. I think that is the only option.”
Ronald nodded in agreement, even though he was anxious to just get it done. He wanted revenge. He wanted to revenge what had happened to Lucas and what had happened to him. Ransley and Ransley only was the reason for all the bad things that had happened.
A few days passed and they couldn’t manage to locate Ransley. Ramsey didn’t try to contact them either, which didn’t bother Ronald. He didn’t care anymore. He just wanted to find Ransley.
He went back to school and noticed that he had fallen behind on every subject. Farrah tried to comfort him with saying that she could always tutor him since she remembered everything there was to remember about school subjects. It didn’t comfort Ronald but he smiled anyway when she said it.
When they had to pair up in their English class, Ronald looked around for a moment, searching for Lucas before he remembered that he was gone. For good. Ronald paired up with some quiet girl, not because he wanted to but because the girl was the only one without a partner.
“Hi, I’m Ronald”, Ronald said to the quiet girl.
“I know, you were Lucas’s friend”, the not-so-quiet-girl-after-all said and then went back to reading her book. Ronald stared at her completely confused and then he just kinda of half shrugged.
“O-kaay… What book are you reading?”
“Can we just decide what book we will read for our project?” the girl asked. Ronald couldn’t understand why she was being so hostile.
“Yeah”, Ronald said, looking down. “We can.”
He missed Lucas.
After that horrible school day when Ronal and Farrah were walking away from school, Farrah suddenly grabbed Ronald’s arm, stopping him.
“What is it?” Ronald asked.
“I hear him”, Farrah whispered, pulling her hair away from her ear to hear better. “He’s talking to someone, I can’t hear the words.”
“Let’s go!” Ronald said and they started running. Ronald wouldn’t let Farrah speed them there since he didn’t want to throw up in front of Ransley. He had to be strong. After running for a moment Ronald realised where they were heading.
“He’s in the cemetery”, Ronald said out of breath and Farrah nodded. “I bet you all my money we can find him by Lucas’s grave.”
They ran and then stopped suddenly when they saw Ransley, kneeling in front of Lucas’s gravestone. He wasn’t talking, his head hang low and there was no trace of a good posture anywhere. He seemed completely beaten up.
“So you came to kill me, huh?” Ransley said quietly without even turning to look at them.
“Yes”, Ronald said, still out of breath and his whole body was shaking from the adrenaline. “This ends here.”
They watched how Ransley slowly got up on his feet, touched gently the gravestone before turning to face them. Ronald took a step back in a shock. He could see that Ransley had been crying. It was so clear even a blind man could see it.
He has to fake it, Ronald thought. No psychopath would cry at someone’s gravestone. Ronald was so confused. Is a psychopath able to have feelings? Real, genuine feelings? He stared at Ransley. No, he had to be faking it. Ronald wouldn’t fall for his acting. Not in a million years.
“You know, I never meant anything bad to happen to Lucas”, Ransley said, staring at Ronald. Ronald noticed more things about him. How he looked like he hadn’t showered in a week, his hair was messy and he had a stubble. He looked absolutely awful and Ronald couldn’t understand it. He was just a ghost of the man with fancy clothes and a smirk on the lips.
“Yeah, no”, Ronald said. “It was just me who you wanted to hurt.”
“You were an easy target. He told me about you, I thought it could be fun to scare you a little. I didn’t know I would lose control”, Ransley said and shrugged. “But I really cared about him.”
In his own twisted way, perhaps, but the fact still stood, Ransley had wittingly lured Ronald and Lucas in the woods just to fuck with them, with Ronald. Ronald looked at Farrah and nodded at her. She revealed her fangs and her eyes turned white and then she attacked Ransley in a blink of an eye.
After being a werewolf for a long time, Ransley had more power than a normal human. He even had enough strength to defend himself against Farrah. He wasn’t as fast as Farrah but he still managed to dodge her a couple of times. He wasn’t going down easily. Plus he had a lot of training on defending himself, thanks to Ramsey.
But then he clearly got tired whereas Farrah didn’t seem to even break a sweat. She gave a well aimed kick at Ransley’s stomach and the man fell on his ass, gasping for air. Farrah speeded behind him, took him into a choke hold and pulled him up on his feet.
“Look at me”, Ronald said as Ransley was gasping for air and trying to pull Farrah’s arm off of his throat. Ransley’s grey eyes turned to face Ronald. “I want you to see my face when you die.” Farrah tightened his grip and Ransley gasped for air. “This is for killing Lucas and turning me.”
Farrah was just about to literally pull Ransley’s head off when a green light hit her on the side and she flew a few meters and hit one gravestone, making it fall on the ground.
“Farrah!” Ronald yelled and ran towards her.
“I’m fine”, she said, quickly getting back on her feet but clearly she was hurting. Ronald touched her side and she winced in pain.
Ransley was on his knees on the ground, gasping for air. Ramsey walked towards them and stopped to stand between Ransley and Farrah and Ronald.
“Ramsey, what the fuck?!” Ronald yelled, helping Farrah to walk closer. “You could’ve hurt her really badly!”
“Sorry”, Ramsey said, still standing between them and Ransley, “but you can’t kill him.”
