It hit both Ransley and Ronald at the same time and they both yelled in surprise and in pain, bending down and breathing heavily.
The turning had started.
“Farrah, take Ronald and Lucas out of here!” Ramsey yelled but it was too late.
Ronald and Ransley turned into werewolves and for a moment everything was frozen in place.
“Oh shit”, Lucas said, now standing a few meters away from werewolf-Ransley and stared first at Ransley then Ronald.
Werewolf-Ronald moved its head back and howled so loud it hurt Lucas’s ears. Then Ronald started running, climbed on top of the cliff and growled at Lucas.
“Ronald?” Lucas half-whispered, a hint of panic in his voice.
But his best friend did not recognize him. Werewolf-Ronald slowly moved closer to Lucas, growling and bit the air, but then Ransley jumped in between them and in turn growled at Ronald.
All hell broke loose.
The werewolves attacked each other and Lucas had to jump out of the way. He was staring at them with a horrified look on his face as the two werewolves were biting, scratching and growling at each other, rolling on the ground as they tried to kill each other. Lucas wanted to yell them to stop before they would seriously hurt each other but he couldn’t, he was too shocked to even open his mouth, not that his words would have any effect whatsoever.
Ramsey and Farrah stared up on the cliff in a shock and then Farrah said, “I have never seen two werewolves going against each other.”
“We need to get Lucas out of there”, Ramsey said.
“I will help Ronald, you go get Lucas out of there”, Farrah decided but before neither of them could move they saw that Lucas had drifted on the very edge of the cliff while Ransley and Ronald were just one big ball of fighting and then Ransley, the bigger werewolf, jumped on Ronald and they fell backwards, hitting Lucas and then all three of them fell from the cliff.
Ramsey and Farrah yelled ‘NO’ and both of them attempted to stop the fall but they were too late. The two werewolves and Lucas hit the ground, hard, and for a moment it seemed like the time had stopped.
Ramsey materialised to where they had fallen and Farrah was right next to him in a blink of an eye. They saw that Lucas was lying with his eyes closed, not moving.
“His heart is still beating”, Farrah said as she leaned closer to Lucas.
Ransley was first to get up. The werewolf stumbled a bit before it looked at unconscious Lucas, then howled heartbreakingly and ran away.
Ramsey attempted to go after him but before he could even lift his finger up, Farrah took a hold of his arm.
“No, Lucas needs you”, she said and Ramsey pressed his lips in a thin line before giving up and kneeling next to Lucas.
Also Ronald managed to get up on his feet, growling and stumbling around. Then its eyes focused on Lucas, Farrah and Ramsey and it took a step towards them. Farrah showed it her fangs and white eyes, hissing. Werewolf-Ronald whined and walked backwards, then it turned around and ran away.
“I will go after him”, Farrah said. “We can’t leave him alone, he clearly can’t control himself one bit.”
“What about him?” Ramsey asked, looking at Lucas. “I’m afraid to move him.”
“You have no choice”, she replied. “You have to take him to a hospital.”
“I can’t materialise in the hospital with him, it might do more damage.”
“Then carry him on the road and call the ambulance!”
Ramsey nodded, taking the orders without any complains and Farrah ran away after Ronald. Ramsey lifted unconscious Lucas carefully up and started carrying him through the woods.
At first it was easy and they moved fast but Lucas wasn’t exactly light to carry because he was completely limb and it was difficult to walk in the forest. Ramsey was sweating and breathing heavily the further they went but he kept going. He was scared that he might drop Lucas since his arms were hurting but he gritted his teeth and still kept going. He kept going until he reached the road. He stopped then and looked around but didn’t see a bus stop or signs telling which road he was on.
He lowered Lucas back on the ground and then he ran alongside of the road, trying to find where they were.
Finally he saw a sign that told the name of the road. He took his phone out, called the ambulance and tried to describe where they were. Then he went back to Lucas, kneeled down next to him and lifted him up. He started walking and he walked forward until the ambulance headlights came to his vision. He lowered Lucas back on the ground and waved his hands. The ambulance stopped next to him and he stopped waving, picked up Lucas, waited that the paramedics got the bed out and he lowered Lucas on it.
“Are you coming with him?” one of the paramedics asked.
Ramsey nodded.
“What happened?” asked the other paramedic.
“He was on a cliff and fell.”
“How many meters?”
“At least ten”, Ramsey said as he climbed inside the ambulance. He looked at Lucas and remembered Ronald’s words telling him not to let anything bad happen to Lucas. That he needed to keep him safe. “I’m sorry, kid.”
They arrived in the hospital and Ramsey was told to wait in the hallway as they took Lucas away. They had questioned Ramsey all the way there and Ramsey had answered the best he could and then they had called Lucas’s parents but since they were out of the town, it would take them almost a day to get back. Ramsey stayed in the hospital, tried to ask from the doctors what was going on, what was Lucas’s situation and could he see Lucas, but no one talked to him. That one time one doctor stopped and answered to Ramsey, he said, “Family only.”
Ramsey gritted his teeth.
“The kid’s family isn’t here”, he said angrily.
“I can’t help you then”, the doctor said and walked away.
The warlock walked back and forth on the hallway, fidgeting his fingers and grumbling curse words under his breath. Why did he let the things turn this messy and shitty? This shouldn’t have happened. He had let down both Ronald and Lucas.
“Fuck”, he muttered and sat down, pressing his head on his hands. He wanted to do something to make the situation better, but there was literally nothing he could do. He couldn’t do a thing to help Lucas and it frustrated him more than anything. He pressed his lips in a thin line and stood up, continuing his walk of back and forth like as if that would help.
He didn’t know what else he was supposed to do, he had done everything he could already.
The turning had started.
