Next morning Ronald didn’t have a chance to talk with his mother before she left to work so he wrote a note to her saying that he will be spending the night at Lucas’s home because they have another group project to do and it will take a long time to finish it. He knew his mother wouldn’t mind him spending the night at Lucas’s home in the middle of the school week because he had done it countless of times before and she was happy if Ronald would just tell her his whereabouts so she wouldn’t have to worry.
He wondered for a moment if he should skip school but eventually decided to go. He left the house, locked the door and walked to school. Air was cold and the ground was slippery from here and there. The winter was definitely coming.
“Hi”, said Farrah at the school’s doors and hugged Ronald. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah”, Ronald replied. “I just hope Lucas doesn’t hate me for letting Ramsey take him away.”
“I’m sure he’ll understand”, Farrah said. “Eventually.”
They went inside the school and then Ronald kissed Farrah quickly, still getting that butterfly feeling in his stomach, and walked to his class.
The school day was rather normal, nothing special happened and after school Ronald and Farrah went to Ronald’s home, they did their homework and packed a bag full of food and some clothes. This time Ronald wanted to be prepared for his turning.
First time for everything, he thought.
When the evening came Ronald and Farrah left the house.
“Are you ready?” Farrah asked.
“You sure you can do it?” Ronald asked.
“It’s a piece of cake”, Farrah said and took a hold of Ronald’s hand. “Try to keep your eyes closed, you’ll get sick and dizzy if you keep them open.”
Then Farrah took Ronald for a piggyback ride. She started running and despite of Farrah’s warning, Ronald couldn’t close his eyes. He didn’t really see anything but the landscape moving so fast he couldn’t notice anything but a few colours here and there. He couldn’t believe that Farrah was strong enough to give him a piggyback ride on full speed. It was amazing. It was amazing how fast she was. Ronald had a hard time believing this was actually happening.
Suddenly Farrah stopped. They were in front of the cave and Ronald slid away from her back and walked with wobbling feet towards the cave. He felt like throwing up.
“Ahh, I should’ve kept my eyes closed”, he whined and bent down, taking deep breaths.
“I tried to warn you”, Farrah said matter-of-factly. Ronald shook his head and concentrated on breathing.
“I am an idiot”, he mumbled and straightened up. “Okay, I’m fine.”
“Are you sure? You look a little pale.”
“That’s just my skin colour”, Ronald sighed. “I always look pale.”
“If you say so”, Farrah said and chuckled. They walked inside the cave and sat down. For a moment it was silent until Ronald spoke.
“What now?” he asked. “We just sit around, waiting?”
“Yes, I suppose so”, Farrah said and shrugged.
They were silent again and Ronald played with Farrah’s fingers. He was nervous because he felt like he was putting Farrah in danger.
“What if I hurt you?” Ronald asked worriedly and looked at Farrah who to his surprise started laughing. “What?”
“Bitch”, Farrah said, surprising Ronald with her language. “I would like to see you try.”
“Seriously? Are you that strong?” Ronald asked.
“No, but you’re young and weak, you’re no threat to me.”
“Weak? You calling me weak?”
“Sorry”, Farrah said and smiled. “But it’s true. Your strength isn’t quite there yet.”
“So what exactly are the perks of being a werewolf?” Ronald asked.
“A good sense of smell”, she said. “Strength, you don’t get easily hurt, good eyesight, not ageing normally… Lots of things, really.”
“But then there’s the pain of turning”, Ronald said. “And the anger that takes over when I turn.”
“You will learn to live with that”, Farrah said and patted Ronald’s back. “I promise.”
Ronald smiled at her and looked outside where it was already dark. He was shivering from the cold, the summer was long gone. He looked at Farrah who didn’t seem to be bothered by the coldness.
They sat in silence and the clock ticked forward. It got darker and darker and also colder and colder. Ronald was restless, he had no idea when the turning would start and he was afraid of it. Afraid of the pain. He had no idea if he would remember anything after turning or not.
Suddenly Farrah froze in place and Ronald could tell she had heard something.
“What is it?” he asked.
“Ramsey and Lucas… and Ransley”, she said. “They are close. Why are they close, they were not supposed to be anywhere near this cave!”
“What’s happening? What are they saying?”
“I can’t hear the words but Ramsey is angry, I can tell.”
“Lucas is there, in the middle of Ramsey and Ransley’s fight!” Ronald yelled and stood up. “We have to go there!”
“No way, that is a stupid ass idea, especially when you can turn at any given moment!” Farrah said, standing up too.
“We need to go! Lucas wasn’t supposed to be in the middle of them fighting!”
“It’s not safe!”
“Farrah!”
“Fine! But when this goes to shit, remember that you wanted this”, Farrah said and Ronald hugged her as a thank you.
“Don’t let me do anything stupid”, Ronald whispered in her ear and then she started running, taking Ronald with her. They were on the other side of the woods in a blink of an eye and Farrah stopped. Ronald was feeling sick yet again but he ignored it because what he was seeing was much more bad than his sick stomach.
Ramsey was standing in front of them, staring up on the cliff where Ransley was standing, Lucas by his side, holding him by his arm. Lucas wasn’t trying to get away but he didn’t look exactly comfortable either. How Ransley had got Lucas away from Ramsey was a mystery to Ronald. Ramsey was supposed to take care of Lucas.
While Lucas was standing quietly, Ramsey and Ransley were yelling at each other angrily.
“Let go of him, Ransley!”
“Lucas belongs to me!”
“You can’t own people!” Ronald yelled.
“With me”, Ransley said, correcting himself. “He belongs with me.”
“You will just kill him like you kill everyone around you!” Ramsey spread his arms. “You killed our whole family, brother. You’ve lost it!”
“I’m not insane!” Ransley yelled. “No matter how much you like to think that I am!”
“Brother?!” Ronald yelled and everyone’s attention turned to him and Farrah. “You’re Ransley’s brother?!”
“Older brother, yes”, Ramsey said, not really seeming to be surprised that Ronald was there. “Didn’t I tell you?”
“NO!” Ronald yelled.
“Ah, must’ve slipped my mind.”
“You are out here trying to kill your own brother?” Lucas asked, looking at Ronald and then turned his eyes on Ransley. “You killed your family?”
Ronald took a hold of a nearest tree. He didn’t feel so good because of the run and now he had found out that Ramsey was Ransley’s brother. He couldn’t believe it. How was that even possible? What was going on? Ronald had so many questions but then… then came the pain.
