Ronald walked back home instead of taking the bus. He talked with Farrah on the phone on his way, asking when she was coming over so they could start their tutoring. Farrah said he could come at the very moment Ronald would be back at home.
When he was finally at home, he sat by the kitchen table, waiting, and soon enough Farrah came there too. When Ronald kissed her hello his anger disappeared immediately.
“Is everything okay? You sounded weird on the phone”, Farrah asked, smiling at Ronald. He smiled back.
“Everything’s okay now.”
“Shall we start studying, then?” Farrah asked. Ronald gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and nodded.
They managed to study for a few hours but then they kind of lost track and ended up talking about Farrah’s life because let’s face it, her life was much more interesting than mathematics.
“What’s the worst thing of living so long?” Ronald asked, looking at Farrah curiously. Farrah sighed, shrugging her shoulders.
“I don’t know. Maybe seeing everyone you’ve ever loved die around you while you keep on living”, she said. “It’s awful. But the scariest part is that you kind of get used to it. People dying, everyone leaving you… Life goes on.”
Ronald looked at Farrah sadly and took her hand in his own. “I will never leave you.”
Farrah gave her a small smile.
“Those are some big words”, she said quietly. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
“Hey...”, Ronald muttered and hugged Farrah. “I’m not going anywhere, okay?”
“Maybe one day you’ll travel the world with me”, she said and smiled genuinely. “It won’t be boring anymore if you are with me.”
“Absolutely”, Ronald said. “I’d love to.”
They kissed again but pulled apart when they heard Ramsey’s voice behind them.
“Sorry to interrupt but I have to talk with Ronald.”
Ronald leaned his forehead against Farrah’s and sighed, annoyed about the interruption. He lifted his head up and looked at Ramsey.
“What?” he asked.
“How you talked with Lucas?” Ramsey asked.
“Why?” Ronald asked instead of answering.
“I lost track of Ransley for a moment yesterday and I have no idea where he was all evening, his slick on his moves. I was wondering if he has tried to contact Lucas.”
“I don’t know”, Ronald lied, playing with Farrah’s fingers.
Ramsey nodded and disappeared just like that without another word which was typical. Farrah turned to look at Ronald with her eyebrows raised.
“Why’d you lie to him?” she asked.
“What?” Ronald asked, acting like as if he didn’t know what Farrah was talking about.
“You always look on your left before lying”, Farrah said. “I’m good at reading people, I have had time to practice that.”
“Ah, shit”, Ronald mumbled. “Look, it’s nothing, really...”
“I don’t believe you. It has to be a pretty big deal if you’re lying about it to Ramsey.”
Ronald hesitated.
“Fine! Okay, I will tell you.”
And he told what he had seen yesterday evening at Lucas’s window. Ronald didn’t know what he had expected but definitely not Farrah getting freaking furious. She narrowed her eyes at him and pulled her hand away from Ronald’s.
“Are you out of your mind?” she asked. “Ransley is seriously dangerous and you didn’t tell Ramsey even though he specifically asked to be informed about all the contact tries Ransley makes!”
“I am no snitch!” Ronald defended himself. “I thought I shouldn’t rat on Lucas because–“
“Because of what, huh?” Farrah was really angry. “Do you understand that you are only making things worse by not telling this to Ramsey?”
“Sorry, I didn’t think it through”, Ronald said. “I was so shocked and–“
“Either you tell Ramsey or I will”, Farrah interrupted.
“You can’t just–“
“Either. You. Tell Ramsey. Or. I. Will”, Farrah repeated slowly and clearly.
Ronald huffed in annoyance and crossed his arms. “Fine!”
Farrah handed him his phone and Ronald called Ramsey.
“What?” he answered in his usual way.
“You know, there is a nicer way to start a call”, Ronald said.
“What?” Ramsey repeated.
“Can you come back? I have to tell you something and I want to do it face to face so you can kill me before Farrah does it”, Ronald said and dodged the pencil Farrah threw at him.
Ramsey hung up the call and was soon standing in front of Ronald and Farrah. He looked at Ronald with raised eyebrows, waiting. Ronald hesitated but Farrah gave him a stern look and he sighed.
“Um… about Lucas and Ransley...”, he said vaguely.
“What about them?” Ramsey asked, managing to sound angry even though it was a normal question and his face was blank.
“I kind of… sort of… maybe saw them together yesterday.”
“You did or you did not see them together yesterday?”
“I did see them together yesterday”, Ronald confirmed defeatedly.
“And what were they doing?”
“Kissing...”, Ronald muttered.
Ramsey pressed his lips in a thin line and narrowed his eyes.
“That’s it”, he finally said. “I’m done with Ransley, this has to end.” He turned to look at Farrah. “You babysit Ronald when the next full moon comes, I need to take down Ransley.”
“I know what could help”, Farrah said, going immediately along with Ramsey’s words which pissed Ronald off a little bit.
“Fine, you’re coming with me then.”
“What about me?” Ronald asked.
“You stay out of the way and keep. Lucas. Away. From. Ransley!” Ramsey said and then he grabbed Farrah by the shoulder and the two of them disappeared.
“Fuck”, Ronald mumbled.
He had no idea what Farrah and Ramsey were going to do and he was kind of hurt that Farrah would leave with Ramsey just like that and leave Ronald alone. They were supposed to have a tutoring session. Not that they had done much school work anyway but still.
He put away his textbook and papers and pencils before going to his room and falling on his bed. He stared at the ceiling and thought how the heck was he supposed to keep Lucas away from Ransley? He was no babysitter, but now he didn’t have a choice. Ronald sighed.
