On Sunday afternoon, when Ronald’s parents finally came home, Lucas was quick to leave the house after saying hi to Ronald’s mother. Ronald’s dad had retreated straight to his office without a word to anyone. Mrs. Quinn apologised on his behalf but Ronald and Lucas didn’t really care, they were used to Ronald’s dad’s rather cold appearance.
“Bye, Lucas, thanks for staying with me!” Ronald yelled when Lucas was already walking down the road. Lucas waved his hand as a goodbye and answer and then lifted his hood up to cover his neck from the wind as he kept walking.
He wandered in the streets because the last bus had already went and then he opened his phone and stared at the text message he had received form Ransley.
Should he meet up with him? Should he listen to what he had to say? Ramsey had told him to stay far away from Ransley but… but he saw something in him, something that the others did not see. Potential. Goodness. Sensitivity. Hope. Also Lucas was kind of curious to hear what Ransley had to say.
Lucas made up his made and texted back two words before he could change his mind: ‘Poppy’s. Now.’.
He didn’t get an answer but he didn’t expect one either. He knew Ransley would show up. He always did.
It took him a bit longer than what he had expected to walk to Poppy’s so Ransley was already there when Lucas stepped inside Poppy’s. He had suggested they would meet at Poppy’s for two reasons: there was always other people because it was only place in town which was open twenty-four-seven and because it was warm and he didn’t want to stay out in the cold. He had thought that having other people around wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Ransley was sitting in their usual table. Lucas took a deep breath and walked over, sat in front of Ransley and said, “Talk.”
“I don’t know what can I say that I haven’t said already”, Ransley said, eyeing Lucas. “You’re convinced that I’m the villain here and I don’t know how to make you change your mind.”
“You can’t”, Lucas said. “You attacked Ronald and I. You sealed your faith right there and then.”
“I understand why you feel that way but–“
“I don’t think you do”, Lucas interrupted him. “I don’t think you understand how I feel right now. I’m heartbroken. You broke my fucking heart, Ransley.”
“You underestimate my feelings for you”, Ransley said and leaned closer, attempting to take a hold of Lucas’s hand but Lucas moved his hands from the table to under it. “I love you, Lucas.”
Lucas felt like crying right there and then. He took a deep breath and looked away from Ransley.
“Did you hear me?” Ransley asked. “I lo–“
“Don’t say that to me”, Lucas whispered, his voice shaking and tears burning behind his eyes. “Why did you want Ronald in the park then, that night, if you care about me like you say? You wouldn’t have done that to me if you lo–“
“I wanted to talk with Ronald, that’s all”, Ransley said.
Lucas shook his head. “I don’t buy it.” He rubbed his face. “I can’t do this. I thought I could but I can’t. I gotta go.”
He stood up and ran out of Poppy’s and for a moment he couldn’t breathe because the wind hit him in the face so hard. He swallowed and blinked, trying to keep the tears away.
Ransley had followed him and took a hold of his arm, stopping him. One tear escaped from Lucas’s eye as he looked at him and Ransley wiped it off his cheek but Lucas turned his head away, avoiding the touch.
“Don’t cry”, Ransley whispered and tried to wrap his arms around Lucas but he pushed him away, turned around and started running away, trying his best to not look back because if he did, he might do something he would regret.
Two weeks after the last time he had turned into a werewolf Ronald was feeling so much better. He’s body wasn’t sore anymore and the bruises had almost faded away. His relationship with Farrah was going great, they fitted together perfectly… or more like Ronald did something stupid and Farrah would laugh at him and then they would kiss. That kind of perfectly. Farrah told him so much about all the werewolves she had met and Ronald find it so interesting, despite of the fact that Farrah had killed almost every werewolf that had came across her path.
What brought down his good mood a little was Lucas. He was so worried about his best friend who was quiet and had secluded himself. He was clearly sad and unhappy. Ronald tried to talk to him several times about the “deep stuff” but each time Lucas just insisted he was fine.
He was not fine, Ronald knew it, he wasn’t blind but there was really nothing he could do. How do you help someone who doesn’t want to be helped?
So when the Friday came Ronald went to the movies with Farrah instead of hanging out with Lucas. Lucas had made it very clear he wanted to be left alone and Ronald thought that maybe he needed some space to figure out his things and then he would be his normal, happy and sarcastic little shit self.
After the movie Ronald was walking home when he decided in a whim to go by Lucas’s home and see if he was still awake so he could try to have a small chat with him.
It was cold as he walked towards the Boyd’s house and saw a light in Lucas’s window. He stopped when he saw Lucas. The boy was standing next to the window, head in his hands. Was he crying?
Ronald’s heart was hurting and he felt like he could cry too. He wanted to be there for his best friend. He had so much pity for him.
But then there came hands on Lucas’s shoulders and Ransley stepped in front of him. They were talking while Ronald stared at them his mouth hanging open, pity long gone. Lucas was talking with Ransley! Ronald’s brain tried really hard to understand what was going on.
Then he watched in horror how Ransley kissed Lucas. Lucas turned his head away and Ransley pressed his head on Lucas neck and clearly he mumbled something that changed Lucas’s mind because Lucas forced Ransley to lift his head up and then they were kissing again. They were so close to each other it was hard to tell where one started and where the other ended. Then they backed away from the window and Ronald couldn’t see them anymore.
He didn’t know what to do. Bust inside the house? No, he couldn’t do that, Lucas’s parents might be home and all hell would break loose.
Ramsey.
He needed to call Ramsey.
He took his phone out and was just about to call to the warlock when he realised that he couldn’t rat out his friend. Snitches get stitches, that’s what they always said.
So, Ronald did the only thing that he could think of; he went home but promised himself that he would bust in Lucas’s home next thing tomorrow morning after his parents and little sister would leave for their every Saturday brunch.
Next morning Ronald was hiding in the bushes, waiting for Lucas’s parents and little sister Emily to leave. When they finally did, Ronald ran to the door, knocked on it and waited. Lucas finally opened it and Ronald pushed himself in and started yelling at Lucas.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?!” he yelled.
“Excuse me?” asked Lucas whose smile had faded away along with Ronald’s words.
“I saw you last night! You were kissing with Ransley and doing God knows what after you disappeared from the window! What the fuck were you thinking?!” Ronald yelled, spreading his arms. “I would really like an explanation!”
“I don’t know what I was thinking, I don’t have an explanation, okay!” Lucas yelled back. “I couldn’t help myself, alright?”
“Not alright, no!” Ronald was furious. “How could you do it? He fucking attacked us, almost killed me! You know he can’t be trusted and yet you go and–“
“You just don’t understand!” Lucas yelled, now he was getting angry too. His mood had went down so fast. “What if it had been Farrah, huh? How would youreact then? What would you have done?”
“If Farrah would have attacked you?” Ronald asked, raising his eyebrows. “I would have told her to go to hell and walked her there myself, Lucas, that’s what I would have done! Not have sex with her!”
Lucas looked down. “We didn’t...”
“I don’t care what you did or didn’t do!” Ronald yelled. “Do you understand how much in danger you put yourself in? There’s no chance of knowing what he could’ve done to you!”
“He has never hurt me!”
“He might!”
“You don’t underst–“
“Don’t tell me I don’t understand!” Ronald yelled. “You have no right to fraternise with the enemy!”
Lucas was about to yell back at Ronald, say that Ransley wasn’t necessarily the enemy, but Ronald’s phone started ringing and Ronald looked at it, furious but then his face changed when he saw that it was Farrah. She was probably calling about the tutoring.
“Ah, speak of her”, Lucas muttered.
“Whatever, I’m out”, Ronald said and started walking to the door, phone still ringing in his hand.
“Ronald!” Lucas yelled after him, taking a few steps closer to Ronald. “You wouldn’t tell Ramsey, right?”
Ronald glanced at Lucas before leaving. “I’m no snitch.”
