Lucas, Ramsey and Ronald appeared in the middle of nowhere and they all fell on the ground as their knees gave up. It had taken a lot of power to transfer a human and a werewolf and Ramsey was breathing heavily but he didn’t care. He pulled Lucas on his feet and with him backed further away from Ronald’s werewolf form who had jumped on its feet and was now growling at them, very furious and angry.
Ramsey and Lucas backed away and Ramsey gathered his strength, lighted up the fire in his hands and stood in front of Lucas, eyes fixed on the werewolf.
“This is his second time turning, he still has no control and he probably doesn’t remember anything but the pain before turning and that’s why he’s so… ready to attack”, Ramsey told Lucas who stood behind him with wobbling knees and a scared look on his face. He didn’t understand completely what was going on but he understood enough.
The werewolf came closer and attempted jumping on them but Ramsey hit the ground in front of it with his green fire and made it back away a bit.
“Climb to a tree”, Ramsey snarled to Lucas, sweat tripping from his forehead as he struggled to use his powers because he was completely exhausted. “You’ll be safer there.”
The werewolf growled and Lucas started moving closer to the nearest climbable tree. Then something dawned to him.
“Don’t hurt him”, Lucas said. “He’s still Ronald, right?”
“I try my best but he is in an attack mode”, Ramsey said. “Climb!”
Lucas climbed to the nearest tree and went as high as he could. He looked down and saw Ramsey hitting the ground with his green fire, keeping Ronald safe distance away.
That’s how it kept going. Werewolf-Ronald wouldn’t give up but neither did Ramsey. They kept glaring at each other, the werewolf and the warlock, and the ground was full of holes from when Ramsey had hit it with his fire.
“I can’t keep going much longer”, Ramsey told Lucas who was wide awake in the tree. “I have to hit him. Maybe he rans away then and we can just follow him and make sure he doesn’t find his way out of the woods.”
Lucas was about to protest but even he saw how tired Ramsey was so he just muttered a quiet ‘okay’ and watched how the fire hit the werewolf’s ribs, making it fly backwards and hit the ground. It whimpered in pain and then it slinked away.
“There’s a cave in that direction”, Ramsey told Lucas who climbed down from the tree. “Go there and stay put. I will come there when the morning comes and Ronald is back to his human form.”
Lucas nodded to let the man know he had understood and agreed and then they went on their separate ways; Ramsey after Ronald and Lucas towards the cave.
That night was the longest in Lucas’s life so far. He sat in the cave, shivering from the cold and worried out of his mind. He was worried about Ronald.
He knew he should be shocked and surprised about the whole werewolf thing but he wasn’t. Well, maybe he was a little bit but not as much as he could be. He had seen it all with his own eyes, what else could he do but to believe it?
He wasn’t only worried, he also felt betrayed but not because of Ronald, but because of Ransley.
Ransley had acted weird after he had met Ronald face to face and he had called to Lucas next morning, asking him to skip school and hang out with him. Lucas had tried to say no but Ransley wouldn’t take no as an answer so Lucas had eventually agreed to skip his school for Ransley.
Lucas should’ve pick up the warning signs from Ransley’s behaviour because he had acted so weirdly. He had been very insistently asking questions about Ronald and when Ronald had tried to call and text Lucas, Ransley had taken his phone away, insisting that they wouldn’t use their phones, saying something about spending quality time.
Lucas should’ve realised then that something was off. But he hadn’t realised until Ransley had taken him to the park, made him sit in a swing and told him that he should not move if he appreciates his life.
And then Ransley had turned into a werewolf.
Lucas’s wouldn’t have been able to move even if he wanted to. He had been so shocked, so scared.
He couldn’t believe it from Ransley. All the lies, all the secrets. He had definitely not seen that one coming. He had thought he knew Ransley, he had seriously thought.
He heard footsteps and tensed up, wondering if it was Ramsey with Ronald or someone else. When a silhouette appeared on the cave’s entrance Lucas realised that the morning had come and the comer was Ramsey, carrying unconscious Ronald bridal style.
“Everything okay with him?” Lucas asked immediately, standing up.
Ramsey nodded and placed naked and bruised Ronald on the ground. Lucas stared at his best friend and then looked at Ramsey.
“What now?” he asked.
Ramsey shrugged. “We wait until he wakes up.” Ramsey looked tired and worn out but he still maintained a good posture and the fire in his dark eyes never seemed to die down.
“Okay”, Lucas said, took his own jacket off and placed it on top of Ronald’s body. He sat down next to his best friend and sighed.
“I have to go away for a while”, Ramsey said, standing by the entrance. A scared look spread on Lucas’s face and Ramsey continued, “I’m not abandoning you, idiot. I will come back.”
“Where are you going?” Lucas asked.
“To check where Ransley is and if he has done any damage back in the town”, Ramsey said. “And Ronald needs clothes.”
“And food”, Lucas said.
Ramsey narrowed his eyes but didn’t argue back. He lifted his finger up and soon he disappeared out of sight. Lucas stared at the spot where Ramsey had stood with wide eyes, unable to turn his eyes away.
What Ramsey was? Some kind of wizard? He thought about everything Ronald had told him about Ramsey Barlow and realised that whatever he was, he was clearly trying his best to help Ronald. He wasn’t a threat.
That made Lucas sigh in relief. It had been kind of obvious that Ramsey wanted to help when he had saved them from werewolf-Ransley but still. It was nice to know that Ronald and he had someone with powers on their side. Powers that could fight against a werewolf.
Lucas looked at unconscious Ronald and sighed again, then yawning after that. God, he was tired but his mind wouldn’t rest. Who was Ramsey and the whole thing of Ronald being a werewolf and Ransley...
“You have so much explaining to do”, Lucas said out loud to Ronald.
“I know”, said a voice from the cave’s entrance. Lucas jumped on his feet and stood in front of Ronald’s body and stared at Ransley furiously, trying to hide the fact that he was caught completely off guard.
“Stay away from us”, Lucas said. His voice didn’t even shake. After all, he had always been the braver one out of the two of them, him and Ronald. And he was also fucking pissed off, which helped.
“You need to hear me out”, Ransley said. “I know you must be shocked and terrified–“
“I’m not either of those things”, Lucas hissed through his teeth. He wouldn’t turn his eyes away from Ransley. “I’m fucking angry!”
“And you have every right to be–“
“You lied to me!” Lucas yelled, his whole body shaking from anger. “You fucking attacked my best friend, and now he’s… he’s like you!”
“I know and–“
But Lucas wasn’t done, not even close. He took a few steps closer to Ransley.
“You lured us into the woods that weekend! You planned it all! You fakedit all, we are just some sick game of yours. I was just a part of your stupid plan! It was all fake!”
“It was never f–“
“You could’ve killed us!”, Lucas yelled, taking another step closer to Ransley and now he was pushing the man’s chest with his hand, making Ransley stumble backward every time. “You. Nearly. Killed. My bestfriend!”
“But I never harmed you, not even once, did I?” Ransley said, staring at Lucas intensively.
That caught Lucas off guard yet again. He lowered his hand that had been on its way to push Ransley again.
“I never did anything to harm you, Lucas”, Ransley repeated, stepping closer to him. “I never wanted to hurt you.”
“You tried to kill my best friend”, Lucas whispered, staring back at Ransley, unable to move or turn his gaze away. His heart was aching in pain. He understood that Ransley had to be wicked because what kind of person says they didn’t want to hurt you but were fine attacking your best friend? But even though he understood that he couldn’t trust Ransley, something in him refused to push him away.
Ransley lifted his hands on Lucas’s cheeks and instead of shoving Ransley away, Lucas stayed frozen in place and closed his eyes, taking a deep, shaky breath and shivering at the touch.
“Lucas, you have to believe me when I say it wasn’t fake”, Ransley said, pressing his forehead on Lucas’s. Lucas opened his eyes and stared into Ransley’s big, grey eyes that where just a few inches away from him. “It was never fake.”
Then he closed the gap between their lips and kissed Lucas. He bulled Lucas against his body, sunk his fingers in Lucas’s hair and just kissed him.
A small gasp escaped Lucas’s mouth and his hands automatically rose to Ransley’s hips and he kissed Ransley back.
But then he realised what he was doing and he pushed Ransley harshly away from him, breaking the forbidden kiss.
Ransley stumbled back and struggled to steady himself. Lucas was breathing heavily and he stared at Ransley with a shocked look on his face. Lucas opened his mouth to say something but he didn’t get the chance because Ramsey appeared behind his back and made him jump in the air with a bouncing heart.
Ramsey and Ransley stared at each other and Lucas’s gaze hopped back and forth between them, waiting to see what was going to happen.
“Oh please, make that fire disappear, you know you can’t hurt me now”, Ransley said with a bored voice.
That’s when Lucas noticed the green fire playing on Ramsey’s hands and then it disappeared. Lucas stared at Ramsey, trying to avoid an eye contact with Ransley even though he could tell by the corner of his eye that Ransley was glancing him every now and then.
“Leave”, Ramsey said coldly.
“I came to have a chat with Lucas.”
“He doesn’t want to talk with you”, Ramsey said. “So leave. There’s nothing here for you.”
“He is”, Ransley said and pointed at the unconscious Ronald lying on the ground behind Ramsey and Lucas. “He should be with me, he’s one of us now.”
“He doesn’t need nor want to be with your psychotic ass!”
“He’s going to want to be with someone who understand him! You think spending time with some fucking warlock will help him on a long run?”
“You did this to him in the first place”, Ramsey hissed. “You seriously expect me to believe that you want to take care of him? Pfft, you just want to finish what you started.”
“You know nothing, Ramsey”, Ransley hissed back.
“Stay away from Lucas and stay away from Ronald”, Ramsey said angrily. “This is between you and me.”
Lucas dared to glance at Ransley and saw Ransley looking at him. Lucas stared back for a moment, not sure what to do but then he just looked down on his shoes and bit his lip.
“Now leave!” Ramsey yelled and Ransley started backing away. He didn’t want to stay any longer, not when Ramsey was there.
Ransley gave one last look to Lucas who was still staring at his shoes. When Lucas heard footsteps he lifted his gaze up and stared at Ransley’s back as the man walked away.
“What happened before I got here?” Ramsey asked from Lucas as soon as Ransley was gone. Lucas turned his eyes on Ramsey.
“Nothing”, he lied.
Ramsey narrowed his eyes.
“Don’t believe anything he says, Lucas”, Ramsey said. “He is a psychopath, he does not care about you, no matter what he says. He just enjoys causing chaos and fucking up people’s life. He’s playing a game and he’ll win if you start believing his shit.”
Lucas just nodded, unable to speak. Ronald started coughing and Ramsey kneeled next to him. Lucas bit his lip and looked in the woods where Ransley had disappeared before going to see if Ronald was okay.
