Next day Lucas did not come to the school.
They had to present their group project in biology class and Ronald had to do the presentation all by himself. At first he was pissed at Lucas for skipping school and leaving him alone to talk in front of the class, but then he got worried when Lucas did not answer any of his calls or texts. Ronald tried to text him where he was and was he okay throughout the day but got no answer whatsoever.
Farrah noticed that something was wrong. She approached Ronald at school, asking if there was something wrong. Ronald had lied and smiled and said that everything was fine, though he was quite sure that Farrah didn’t believe a word he was saying – he didn’t believe them himself either. She had looked at him suspiciously and full of doubt before Ronald had said that he had to go and just like that he had left, feeling really bad about it.
At the end of the school day Ronald didn’t go straight to home, instead he took a bus and went to Lucas’s home because busses were faster than walking. He knocked on the door but no one opened it. He knocked again and waited but eventually he had to leave, accepting the fact that no one was home, not even his parents or his little sister Emily.
He tried calling to Lucas but the lad still did not answer. What had happened, where was he? Ronald was getting very worried. Should he warn Lucas about Ransley? Ramsey had said that Lucas would be okay but Ronald wasn’t so sure about that. He thought that Lucas had the right to know what was going on even though he didn’t know Ronald’s secret yet. But what kind of friend would Ronald be if he wouldn’t warn Lucas about his psychotic boyfriend?
He send a text message to Lucas saying that he needs to stay away from Ransley and call Ronald back so he can explain everything to Lucas. After sending the message Ronald walked to the bus stop and got in the bus that arrived fifteen minutes later.
He went home and entered the empty house. He threw his school bag on the floor and spaced back and forth between the kitchen and the front door.
Why wasn’t Lucas answering him?
Hours ticked by and Ronald got even more worried. He tried calling to Ramsey but the man didn’t answer either. What was up with everyone, why no one answered to him? The darkness fell and Ronald’s parents came home. Mrs. Quinn questioned his spacing and he lied that he was going on a date soon and he was just nervous.
“A date? In the middle of the week? At this time?” his mother asked and Ronald just nodded, trying to smile believably.
“Be home by eleven, you have school tomorrow”, his mother said and Ronald’s mouth dropped open.
“Eleven? Who in their right mind let’s their kid stay out until eleven on a school night?” Ronald asked before he could stop himself.
“Are you questioning my decision?”
“Absolutely not!” Ronald said and quickly disappeared in his room before his mother could say anything else or before he would say something stupid and gets himself banned from leaving the house.
He looked at the time and saw that it was nine already. Had his mother really bought the date thing? Unbelievable. Then he suddenly realised it.
Find my friend-app! He could check where Lucas’s phone was. How did he not come up with it earlier? He quickly tracked Lucas’s phone and saw that he was in the park nearby. It was the same park where Ronald spent time every now and then.
Ronald frowned. What on earth was Lucas doing in the park? Why wasn’t he answering Ronald’s calls? Clearly his phone was on.
“Something’s wrong”, he muttered and stood up from his bed. He needed to go in the park and look for Lucas. He checked the time again and figured he still had a couple of hours before he would start turning, last time it had happened pretty late in the night.
Ronald was just about to open his bedroom door when Ramsey materialised inside his room without a warning.
“Jesus Christ”, Ronald groaned, placing a hand on his bouncing heart. “You scared me!”
“We should go”, Ramsey said, ignoring Ronald’s words. “You can never be sure when the transformation starts. It could start any minute now or hours from now.”
“But I have to go find Lucas!”
“What?”
“He’s missing, he is not answering any of my phone calls or texts and I’m getting really worried”, Ronald explained. “I tracked his phone and he’s supposedly in the park. I’m heading there right now.”
“Did you not hear what I said?” Ramsey walked closer. “You cannot know when you will turn, you need to get out of here.”
“Not without knowing that Lucas is okay!” Ronald said, dodged Ramsey’s hand when he reached out for him and walked out of the door. He ran out of the house without saying goodbye to his mother and ran straight against Farrah who had been standing behind his door.
“Hey”, Farrah said. “What’s the hurry? I was worried about you, you have acted weird today so I thought I would come and check–”
“Sorry, I need to go”, Ronald said and ran towards the park, leaving dumbfounded Farrah behind. Ronald was so worried about his best friend he didn’t even understand to feel bad for Farrah even though this was the second time he just left her and ran away.
It took him fifteen minutes to run there and he was sweaty and out of breath when he finally arrived. He looked around and wondered where he should start looking for Lucas.
“Lucas likes swings”, he muttered out loud. He should start from there. He started jogging and soon he arrived to the playground where there were slides and swings and whatnot. First he didn’t see anything but the silver light from the moon shining the slides, but then he saw him.
Lucas was sitting on a swing nearby a bunch of trees.
He had a horrified look on his face, his eyes were the size of a plate and he was gripping the chains of the swing so hard Ronald was sure he would break them.
Before he could open his mouth and say something to Lucas, a shocking pain hit through his body.
Oh, no, not now, Ronald thought as he bent down in pain.
“Ron, watch out!” Lucas said. “He’s a werewolf, he’s the one who attacked us!”
Ronald looked up and saw a figure walking out of the woods from behind Lucas. He recognised the thing immediately. It had red eyes, bony figure, sharp teeth and it was growling.
It was the same one who had attacked Lucas and him in the woods back then.
It was Ransley in his werewolf form.
The werewolf circled around Lucas, its eyes focused on Ronald. Ronald whimpered in pain and struggled to stay on his feet.
“Ronald, run!” Lucas yelled and shut his mouth when the werewolf growled.
Ronald dropped on his knees, screaming in pain and then he looked at Lucas.
“There’s something I haven’t told you”, he said through gritted teeth. “You need to run, Lucas.”
“What?”
Then the pain took over Ronald’s body and he was squirming on the ground, yelling and screaming. His teeth grew bigger and sharper, his face started to transform, he’s bones grew longer and bigger and his clothes got ripped apart.
Before Lucas had time to even take a breath in a shock, there was another bony, slightly smaller, red eyed werewolf standing where Ronald had been seconds before and it was growling angrily. Lucas wasn’t sure whether it was growling at the other werewolf, Ransley, or at him. Lucas’s heart was beating fast and he couldn’t believe this was happening. First his boyfriend had transformed into a werewolf right in front of his eyes, then his best friend.
The two werewolves eyed each other, growling and then they howled and started moving closer to each other.
Lucas didn’t dare to make a sound, he was too afraid that the werewolves would attack him if he would make any sounds.
Suddenly a hand gripped his shoulder and when Lucas looked behind him he saw someone he recognised from Ronald’s description.
“You’re Ramsey Barlow”, he breathed out.
“Which one is Ronald?” Ramsey asked.
Lucas looked at the werewolves whose attention had turned to them. A green fire was playing on Ramsey’s hands and Lucas’s mouth dropped open.
“What?”
“Which one is Ronald?” Ramsey repeated.
“That smaller one”, Lucas managed to get out.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
A green fire left Ramsey’s hands and hit the bigger werewolf who flew backwards and then Ramsey took a hold of Lucas’s shoulder, dematerialised out of sight with him and appeared behind Ronald, took a hold of his boney arm and then the all three of them disappeared just when the bigger werewolf got back up. It looked around for a moment, but when no one was on sight, it howled and ran away.
In the bushes, a horrified look on her face, was kneeling down Farrah Livingstone. She looked at the direction where the werewolf had run and then the spot where Ronald, Lucas and that man had disappeared right in front of her.
“It can’t be...”, she muttered and got up on her feet.
