Lucas eyed Corlisse and tried to decide whether or not she was trustworthy, but it was hard to decide because she hadn’t said anything yet. Farrah was eyeing Corlisse suspiciously, while Ronald was staring at her with her mouth hanging open, which, to be honest, Lucas understood, because Corlisse looked absolutely breathtaking.
Hello, Lucas was gay, not blind.
“How is she going to help us?” Ronald finally asked.
“She is a warlock”, Ramsey said.
Ronald deadpanned. “I mean… we already have you, what are we going to do with two warlocks? No offence.”
Corlisse shook her head as a way to say “Non taken”, and Lucas started immediately like her a little bit.
Ramsey rolled his eyes, looking annoyed.
“Corlisse is even older than me or Ransley”, he said. “We talked, she is up to speed and we might have solution. She and I are willing to do it but we need your approval too, Ronald.”
“My approval? To your plan?” Ronald asked in disbelief. Lucas was having a hard time to believe it too.
“Yes”, Ramsey said, “because it includes risking your life.”
“What?” Lucas asked, but as always, received no attention. “I don’t approve. Do you hear me? I don’t approve!”
“Let’s go through it one more time”, Ronald said. “Just to make sure I understood.”
Lucas was spacing around the room, desperate to kick something in frustration, but sadly he couldn’t because his leg would just go through everything. He was stressed and he didn’t want to hear the plan again, but he heard it anyway when Ramsey started talking with the help of Corlisse.
“We can’t contact Lucas via the Ouija board”, Ramsey said, “if we don’t want him to suffer.”
“In that case the only way to communicate with Lucas is to go to him, literally”, Corlisse said with an beautiful accent. “To go to the space between the living world and the other side.”
“The only way to get there without killing yourself is being dangerously close to death”, Ramsey said and looked at Ronald. “Corlisse and I can make that happen.”
“But you get the same injuries as humans, right? So how are you going to put anyone near death without going there by yourselves too?” Ronald asked.
Ramsey rolled his eyes, but Corlisse was the one who answered.
“We get the same physical wounds”, she said. “Like if I make you go unconscious, I stay awake because it’s not technically physical. But if I make your heart stop, my own heart stops too.”
“This is so complicated”, Ronald whined.
Good! Lucas thought. Don’t agree on this plan then!
“We are stronger together”, Ramsey said matter-of-factly. “Basically the plan is to make your heart dangerously close to stopping, mumble the same old mantra that should rip your soul out of your body and go to the place where Lucas is.”
“But–“
“Our heart rates will slow down too, but not enough for us to pass out”, Corlisse said, interrupting Ronald. “Ramsey has his mother’s necklace, I have my mother’s head jewellery.” She pointed at the small golden chains on her head. “We can channel their powers. If either one of us would do this alone, the death would be sure thing. But together–“
“–we might be strong enough to give you at least ten to fifteen minutes with Lucas”, Ramsey finished.
Lucas stopped and stared at Ronald.
“Don’t agree on this, Ronald!” he yelled without any effect whatsoever.
“Okay”, Ronald said, “but how does one get to Lucas? How to find him? The place where he is… how can we make sure that I end up in the same place as his spirit?”
“We need something that was Lucas’ to guide your spirit to the right place”, Corlisse explained.
Silence filled the room, and Lucas noticed that he was the only one who saw Ransley lifting his hand up and touching his necklace. Lucas watched how he ran his fingers along the necklace and touched gently the silver ring hanging on it.
He kept it, Lucas thought, feeling suddenly very warm.
“Mr. and Mrs. Boyd packed up all of Lucas’ stuff”, Ronald said. “They told me when I tried calling Emily. I don’t know how we can get something that was his.”
“We’ll figure that out later”, Ramsey said. “Now we need to know if you’re willing to go through with this plan.”
Ronald nodded without hesitation. “Yes.”
“NO!” Lucas yelled and walked to the Ouija board. He had to try to signal them that he didn’t want them to risk their lives for him. Unfortunately his fingers went straight through the planchette and he couldn’t move it.
“Ronald, no!” Farrah said and Lucas sighed in relief. If Farrah said no, there was 70% chance that Ronald wouldn’t go through with this idiotic plan.
“I have to”, Ronald argued.
“It’s too dangerous”, Farrah said. “There must be another way! Or let me do it, I’m stronger and older. I have a better chance to survive.”
“Your heart is not beating, darling”, said Corlisse. “We cannot use you for this mission.”
Everyone started talking at the same time, except Ransley. He stayed out of the argument and Lucas could see how he was thinking hard, squeezing the necklace inside his fist.
“Oh, no”, Lucas said, the relief he had felt now long gone, when he realised what was going on inside Ransley’s head. “No, Ransley, don’t you dare!”
But he dared.
“I’ll do it!” Ransley yelled.
The room went quiet and Lucas slapped his hand on his forehead.
“What?” said Ronald.
“Yes”, said Farrah.
“No”, said Ramsey.
Corlisse eyed them all and before they could start another argument, she said: “Ransley is older than Ronald. He might have a better chance to survive. And his heart is beating thus we can use him.”
“But why would you–“, Ronald started.
“Don’t question this, Ronald”, Farrah interrupted.
“How can we trust him?” Ronald asked. “How can we know if he really even tries to help Lucas?”
“You can’t”, Ramsey said. “Ransley is not doing this.”
“Yes, I am”, Ransley argued back and pointed at his necklace. “I have Lucas’ ring. I’m sure Ronald recognizes it. He gave it to me. It’s a sign. I have to go.”
Ramsey gritted his teeth but when Lucas saw Corlisse nod at him, Ramsey let out a breath and said: “Okay. Fine.”
“Ronald?” Farrah asked, touching slightly his shoulder.
Ronald huffed, puffed and then groaned. “Fine!”
“No, no, no”, Lucas whimpered. “Why are you all such an idiots? I need help but not like this! And what the fuck are you even going to do if you get here, Ransley? Hang out with me? You can’t do anything to help me if you’re close to death and just a spirit!”
Corlisse nodded. “It is decided then.” She looked at Ransley and lifted her chin up. “You have to know the risks, Ransley; if you die, we die”, she pointed at herself and Ramsey, “and I trust you know what you are getting yourself into.”
“I do know what I’m getting myself into”, Ransley said. “I can do it.”
“Please, Ransley, no!” Lucas yelled but as expected, his words reached no one. “Fuck!”
Lucas felt guilty. He should’ve answered to them when they were still using the Ouija board. Maybe they wouldn’t have came up with this idiotic plan if he had answered them. Actually, now that Lucas thought about it, he was sure that this plan wouldn’t have happened if he would’ve communicated with them.
Now he had to watch Ransley die, which reminded him of that time when he had seriously thought that Ransley was about to die.
Hello, Lucas was gay, not blind.
