Lucas was so shocked. He didn’t know what to do, how to be, what to say. But did it really even matter? No one would see him or hear him anyway. Lucas felt his heart bouncing in his chest. Farrah looked like she was thinking very hard, Ronald was standing there his mouth hanging open and Ramsey looked annoyed, while Ransley was twitching and wiggling his fingers, clearly feeling restless, stressed and uncomfortable.
He hasn’t said a word, Lucas realised. Why is he so quiet? It’s not like him.
“Okay”, Ronald finally said. “So… we need another tactic. We can’t use the Ouija board unless it is absolutely necessary.” Ronald scratched his neck. “Any ideas what we should do?”
“We?” Ramsey asked. “There’s no ‘we’ here, kid.”
“You have to help me to help Lucas”, Ronald said. “You can’t just–“
“Oh, but yes I can”, Ramsey said and reached for Ransley’s shoulder. “I have already helped you, I told you everything you needed to know.”
Lucas was sure Ramsey was going to disappear with Ransley, but to his surprise Ransley dodged Ramsey’s hand and stepped further away.
“At least talk with them”, Ransley said quietly. Lucas wanted so much to talk with Ransley. Clear everything up, get answers to his questions, but he couldn’t. Not now, not there.
Ramsey huffed, glared at Ransley and then spun around, looking at Ronald and Farrah. Lucas walked among them, feeling too restless to stay put.
“If you want to help Lucas, you need to figure out why he is stuck”, Ramsey stated. “Ask him or something, frankly I don’t give a shit.”
“And what if he doesn’t know why he is stuck?” Ronald asked.
Ramsey clearly wanted to punch, or slap, Ronald for asking that, and Lucas figured it was probably because the question was stupid.
“Are you stupid?” Ramsey asked. “Then you, obviously, start investigating the reasons why he is stuck and didn’t move on to the light.”
“Right”, Ronald said, furrowing his eyebrows. “But you’ve been here for 300 years. Do you have any idea what could be the reason why he’s stuck?”
Ramsey sighed, looking bored and Lucas just had to roll his eyes at him. What was Ramsey’s problem? Why did he have to be so grumpy all the time?
“The reason why Lucas is stuck is probably because he hasn’t accepted his death”, Ramsey said to Ronald. “He just needs to accept his death, I’m fairly sure of that. 90% of the time that is the case.”
Lucas’ eyebrows shot up and mouth dropped open.
Accept his death?
Accept his death?
ACCEPT HIS DEATH?!
Who the fuck did Ramsey think he was? Lucas was fine with being dead. It was okay that he had died, but actually accept his death? Just like that? With a snap of his fingers? Fuck no. Lucas refused to believe that he was stuck only because he hasn’t accepted that he was dead. How does that even happen? Surely not just like that with a snap of his fingers. There needed to be more to it than just that.
Lucas was mad. Really mad.
“We are leaving”, Ramsey said.
“No!” Ronald yelled at Ramsey. “We need to use the Ouija board one last time! All of us, so that it doesn’t resist Lucas so badly!”
“Fine”, Ramsey said, “but after that we are going away.”
They gathered around the Ouija board once again but Lucas stayed where he was. No way in hell was he answering them anymore. Or at least not right now.
Let them suffer, Lucas thought and watched how they kept calling his name. He ignored the way their calling made him feel and watched, anger floating inside him, how they gave up and Ronald started panicking.
“What has happened to him?” Ronald asked. “Is he okay? Why won’t he answer? Lucas! If you see and hear me, please answer!”
Lucas just glared at them and let himself slowly start to slip away.
“We are leaving”, Ramsey repeated once again.
“You can’t!” Ronald yelled.
“We did our part.”
“But something is wrong, he isn’t answering!”
“How is that my problem?” Ramsey asked coldly.
“You were supposed to keep him safe”, Ronald said angrily. “And look what happened; he is stuck in some fucking limbo, all alone and scared!”
I’m not scared, Lucas thought angrily. Fuck this, I have had enough.
He slipped away completely, leaving Farrah, Ronald, Ramsey and awfully quiet Ransley alone. He needed to get away from them.
He needed to see his family.
